Sony Cyber-shot H5 Review

Sony Cyber-shot H5Digital Photography Review

The Cyber-shot DSC-H1 was Sony’s first foray into the increasingly crowded compact, image stabilized ’super zoom’ market, and it was a very successful one too. The DSC-H5 (along with little brother the DSC-H2) arrived almost exactly a year later in February 2006. The H5 is notable as the first ‘big zoom’ compact camera to feature a 7 megapixel sensor (a new Sony 1/2.5″ CCD), and for its huge 3.0″ screen. Otherwise the specification is pretty much the same as the H2, itself a fairly subtle update to the original H1 - no bad thing given the very high standards set by that model.

Sony DSC-H2Imaging Resource

The newly-released DSC-H2 model updates the H1 with a larger CCD at 6.0-megapixels, and extends a few capabilities as well, with a wider ISO range and an optional function guide for onscreen help. Most of the H2’s functions will be familiar to users of other Sony digital cameras, and newcomers to the line will appreciate the camera’s simplicity. The Sony H2 features the same 12x optical zoom lens and Image Stabilization technology as the H1, and offers full manual to full auto exposure control, with a nice selection of creative tools at the user’s disposal.

Nikon Coolpix P3 Concise Review

Nikon Coolpix P3Digital Photography Review

Announced just before PMA in February 2006, the 8 megapixel Coolpix P3 replaces the P2 at the top of Nikon’s compact Coolpix range, adding a few features (the headline change being the introduction of optical image stabilization) and sleeker, simpler styling. Like the P2 the P3 is one of the small, but growing, band of cameras with built-in wireless (802.11 b/g) Wi-Fi capabilities, and like most of Nikon’s higher-end Coolpix models it is stuffed to the gills with features, options and controls. Nikon also announced a sister model (the Coolpix P4) that offers exactly the same specification without the Wi-Fi for around $40 less. It is safe to assume that the image quality and handling aspects of this review are equally applicable to the P4.

Canon PowerShot S3 ISDigital Camera Resource Page

The Canon PowerShot S3 IS is an update to last year’s very popular PowerShot S2 ultra zoom camera. The S3 isn’t a revolution compared to the S2 — in fact, the upgrades are fairly minor for the most part. New features on the S3 include:

  • Uses a 6 Megapixel CCD (instead of 5MP)
  • New ISO range of 80 - 800 (instead of 50 - 400); lower noise than previous sensor
  • 2″ LCD display (versus 1.8″)
  • Live histogram in record mode
  • New widescreen (16:9) still image mode
  • New Sports scene mode
  • Black-colored body; slightly larger and heavier than S2

Everything else is the same as on the PowerShot S2. That means that the S3 has a 12X optical zoom lens, optical image stabilizer, rotating LCD, full manual controls, and enhanced movie mode.

Pentax Optio A10Digital Photography Review

The new ‘flagship’ in Pentax’s long-running Optio range was announced at the CES show in January. The basic specification is fairly standard for a camera in this class; 3x optical zoom, 8 megapixels, 15 scene modes (including a high sensitivity / ISO 800 ‘candlelight’ option) and a large 2.5-inch screen, but the Optio A10 does have a couple of tricks up its sleeve, including a CCD-shift image stabilization system, in-camera effects and frames, and the ability to record movies in the highly efficient (and widely used) MPEG-4 DivX format.

Canon EOS 30D Digital SLR

Posted in Canon, Reviews at 7:22 am by Contact

Trusted Reviews

The EOS 30D is the replacement for the extremely popular EOS 20D, which was launched in August 2004. It is the latest incarnation of a range of models which started back in 2000 with the EOS D30, which was followed by the D60 in 2002 and the 10D in 2003. The 30D gets a larger and sharper 230,000 pixel 2.5in LCD monitor, a larger selection of ISO settings at 1/3-EV intervals, and spot metering, something that was inexplicably omitted from the 20D. Other additions include a slightly larger image buffer, an RGB histogram function, a second lower speed continuous shooting setting (3 fps as well as 5fps), and a new more durable shutter mechanism that is supposedly good for 100,000 shots. Changes to the ISO setting are now shown in the viewfinder, and file sizes are shown in playback mode. I???ll pause here for your pulse to stop racing.
