Digital Photography Review?

Pros

  • Amazing 18x zoom range
  • Truly versatile 28-504mm range, with real wideangle
  • Comprehensive and extensive feature set
  • Effective Image Stabilization system (good for two stops)
  • Decent resolution
  • Good, though by no means class-leading results at lower ISO settings
  • Generally natural color rendition (slightly anemic reds aside)
  • Raw mode (with JPEG duplicate options)
  • Superb battery life
  • Excellent handling & build quality
  • Decent electronic viewfinder
  • Nice screen - gains up well in low light
  • Good level of customization available
  • Excellent flash exposures
  • In-camera editing (including raw conversion) of saved files
  • Decent movie quality

Cons

  • Images lack biting crispness, some loss of fine detail to noise reduction
  • Some corner softness at long end of zoom
  • Distortion throughout the zoom range
  • Focus slow at long end of zoom and in low light
  • Occasional focus errors (where the camera says it’s in focus and it isn’t)
  • Full resolution burst mode unimpressive
  • Purple fringing and chromatic aberration (fairly mild, but visible)
  • Slow file writing (xD-Picture Card)
  • Poor artificial light Auto White Balance and slightly unreliable Custom White Balance
  • Screen blooming and slow reaction to brightness changes in live preview
  • Movie mode restrictions (can’t use sound with IS or zoom turned on)
  • Mild overexposure of bright scenes leading to highlight clipping (can be fixed with AE-C)
  • Supplied raw converter produces unimpressive results
  • HIgher ISO settings noisy and soft (due to noise reduction)
  • Almost pointless low-resolution ISO 3200 and ISO 5000 settings
  • Disappointing macro performance

DCRP Review: Olympus EVOLT E-330

Posted in Olympus, Reviews at 8:56 am by Contact

Olympus E-330 Digital SLRDigital Camera Source Page

Being the jaded camera reviewer that I am, the talk of yet another entry-level digital SLR didn’t excite me. Then Olympus told me the secret of the EVOLT E-330 ($999 body only, $1099 with lens): it’s the first digital SLR with a real “live view” on the LCD — just like on the point-and-shoot digicam you may already own. This type of camera has been the subject of rumors for quite some time, with most people figuring that there would be an electronic viewfinder in place of the traditional optical viewfinder. That is not the case on the E-330: there’s a regular optical viewfinder in addition to that live view 2.5″ LCD.

DCRP Review: Olympus SP-500 Ultra Zoom

Posted in Olympus, Reviews at 7:52 am by Contact

Olympus SP-500 Ultra ZoomDigital Camera Resource Page

The SP-500 Ultra Zoom is the latest big zoom camera in Olympus’ lineup. The SP-500UZ is the descendent of the C-765/770 models, which were introduced way back in early 2004. Olympus was kind of a pioneer in the ultra zoom space, and now virtually every camera maker has at least one UZ camera for sale. While many of Olympus’ competitors have added image stabilization to their ultra zooms, Olympus has not had this feature on their cameras since the legendary C-2100UZ from the year 2000. What you will find on the SP-500UZ is a 10X optical zoom lens, 6 Megapixel CCD, large 2.5″ LCD display, full manual controls, and plenty of scene modes too.

Olympus SP-310 Digital Camera

Imaging Resource?

The Olympus SP-310 features a 7.1-megapixel CCD, 3x lens, and the availability of full manual exposure control in a pocket-friendly, compact size. (It does drop the external flash hot shoe sported by its “big brother,” the 8-megapixel Olympus SP-350. Other characteristics are very similar between the two cameras though, so readers already familiar with the SP-350 can save themselves some reading and just skip down to the Test Results section below.) In addition to the camera’s automatic and manual controls, the SP-310 offers no less than 24 preset Scene modes, including a QuickTime Movie mode. With its small size, nice selection of creative controls, and high resolution sensor, the Olympus SP-310 is an excellent all-around camera suitable for novices and experienced amateurs alike.

Olympus E-500 EVOLTDigital Photography Review

The E-500 EVOLT was announced on 26th September 2005, almost exactly a year after the E-300 which was the first affordable Four Thirds System digital SLR. The E-500 features an eight megapixel Kodak 4/3 Type CCD sensor, a Four Thirds System lens mount and a more traditional pentaprism viewfinder. Appearance wise the E-500 looks more like a traditional film SLR than the long and flat E-300 with its sideways swinging mirror and viewfinder setup. Improvements over the E-300 include an all new metering system, a larger 2.5″ LCD monitor, better control layout and other firmware delivered improvements.

DCRP Review: Olympus Stylus 800

Olympus Stylus 800Digital Camera REsource Page

The Olympus Stylus 800 ($399) is a compact, all-weather 8 Megapixel digital camera. Like the other cameras in the Stylus series, the Stylus 800 can take a splash of water and it can keep shooting. This doesn’t mean that it can go swimming with you — because it can’t — but a day at the beach is no problem. Other features on the Stylus 800 include a 3X optical zoom lens, large 2.5″ LCD display, VGA movie mode, and limited manusal controls.

Olympus E-300 EVOLT Review

Olympus E-300 EVOLTDigital Photography Review

The E-300 (’EVOLT’ in North America) became the second ever Four Thirds System digital SLR when it was announced by Olympus at Photokina 2004. The camera features an eight megapixel Kodak 4/3 Type CCD sensor, a Four Thirds lens mount and an unusual Optical Porro Finder. The viewfinder uses four mirrors instead of a prism, its sideways swinging mirror lends to the camera’s flat-top profile. Instead of the image from the lens being directed upwards to the viewfinder prism it is directed rightwards and then up to the viewfinder which is offset from the lens axis. read more …
