Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1

Posted in Panasonic, Reviews at 12:36 pm by Contact

On February 26th 2006, in a packed press conference on the first day of PMA 2006 Panasonic revealed their first digital SLR, the DMC-L1. The DMC-L1 represents another first, it’s the first non-Olympus Four Thirds digital SLR which has to be good news for the system which has up until now been an Olympus only affair. When it was announced many noted the resemblance to the E-330, this is no coincidence as the DMC-L1 shares its optical subsystem (lens mount, mirror box, viewfinder, auto focus and exposure sensors) with the Olympus E-330.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 is an upgrade to the DMC-LX1 from last year (read our review). That camera was unique for its 16:9, “widescreen” CCD and 28 mm lens. On the LX2 Panasonic has added several new features, some good, some not-so-good. They include:

  • 10.2 Megapixel widescreen CCD (versus 8.4 on the LX1)
  • Widescreen 2.8″ LCD display (versus 2.5″, 4:3 LCD on the LX1)
  • Uses new Venus III image processor (the LX1 used Venus II)
  • ISO can go up to 1600 (3200 in high sensitivity mode) compared to 400 on the LX1
  • Higher resolution movie mode (1280 x 720 vs 848 x 480)
  • Improved battery life (300 vs 240 shots)
  • Adds 13MB of built-in memory (in lieu of a bundled memory card)
  • Support for SDHC memory cards

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7Digital Photography Review

Almost a year to the day since the introduction of the hugely popular FZ5 (and 4MP sibling the FZ4) - itself an upgrade to the FZ3 - Panasonic has announced its successor, the 6 megapixel DMC-FZ7. As well as a design facelift and an extra megapixel, the FZ7 introduces several handling and performance improvements over the FZ5, not least of which is the inclusion of manual focusing and significantly easier control over exposure settings via a new joystick (as seen on the DMC-LX1).

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1Trusted Revies

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 is an 8 megapixel digital camera with a difference - it’s the first compact digicam to feature a 16:9 ratio CCD sensor, perfect for viewing on your widescreen TV or just for a more panoramic effect. The DMC-LX1 also offers more conventional 3:2 and 4:3 ratio images via a switch on the lens barrel, achieving these sizes by removing 1 megapixel and 2 megapixels respectively. In addition to the unique widescreen image format, the Panasonic DMC-LX1 has a wealth of options that will appeal to the more serious photographer. A 4x optical zoom lens from Leica which starts at a wide-angle 28mm, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen, optical image stabilizer, full range of manual exposure controls, compact all-metal body and RAW, TIFF and JPEG image formats are all on offer.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 Review

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5Digital Photography Reviews

The DMC-FZ5 solves the only two reservations most people had about its predecessor (the DMC-FZ3); fairly low pixel count and slightly sluggish focus (especially at the long end of the zoom). It also adds a bigger, better screen, slightly better ergonomics and seems to have almost entirely removed the vignetting problem that plagued FZ3 shots. Put all these improvements together and you’ve got an incredibly powerful, incredibly compact camera capable of punching well above its weight. In fact, unless you really want a big camera, or really need manual focus or external flash, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the FZ5 over the hugely popular, but more expensive, FZ20 - such is the small difference in image quality and overall performance (and with near-SLR speed focus the cheaper camera is much better in one important respect).
